MOS EISLEY — We’ve been getting a lot of Star Wars news over the last year or so. We know the next installment in the epic saga is coming later this year and we also got excited about announcements of anthology films.
“Rogue One” sounds pretty awesome,
and we were all pretty pumped about hearing a Boba Fett flick was in the works. But can we all be honest with ourselves for a moment? We were all just biding our time until a Han Solo anthology film was announced.
Wait no more, my friends. Not only has the film been given a release date, but it also got two amazing directors and a pair of screenwriters we all recognize.
Directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord will helm the Solo film, and they seem like a perfect fit. The duo are two of the most sought-after filmmakers in Hollywood at the moment following huge successes like “The Lego Movie,” “21 Jump Street,” “22 Jump Street” and “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.”
In a statement released on starwars.com, the directing duo said this movie is a dream come true.
“We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”
Lord and Miller will direct with veteran screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jonpenning the script. Lawrence is no stranger to the Star Wars, universe having co-written “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Return of the Jedi” and “The Force Awakens.” Other credits to Kasdan’s name include “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “The Big Chill.”
Jon Kasdan will handle writing duties along with his father. Jon’s writing credits include “In the Land of Women” and episodes of the TV shows “Freaks and Geeks” and “Dawson’s Creek.”
“We’re so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the Star Warsuniverse,” the Kasdans said on starwars.com. “They’re two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.”
The next big step for the upcoming Han Solo film will be who will play the iconic scoundrel. That news, however, is likely a long way out. With that said, fellow KSL.com contributor Travis Poppleton and I have a few ideas who could take the role.
The Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film is due in theaters May 25, 2018.
